Rock For Cats!

--------------------------

HI! THis ia an open offer to show the "D.I.Y. or DIE" arts documentary to help you and to save the lives of cats and dogs:

Here’s the video http://www.kittyfeet.com/woody/rockFurCats.mpg
of the thing NBC news KPRC in Houston did about the benefit I helped organize for cats, and showed the film.

From now on, anyone who wants to can do a showing of my film, D.I.Y. or Die: How to Survive as an Independent Artist in their home town, and keep up to half of the money for you or your organization to cover your time and expenses. Get local bands to play if you can.

Don't send the other half to me. DONATE IT TO YOUR LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER. If you don't have a local animal shelter, donate it to the ASPCA. ( e-mail them at donations@aspca.org )

So---I'm sitting on a train from Berlin to Hamburg near the tail end of my European film tour. And I have an idea. It's called, "Show DIY or DIE, make money, help cats".

I have pretty much taken this movie as far as I need to. It's allowed me to tour the world. Pretty cool. I initially wanted to just show it in the San Francisco Indie Fest (they turned it down), and maybe get it on some cable TV shows (which we did. A lot), and maybe make 50 copies for friends.

It has done way better than that. I've personally presented it in 40 cities in American and 32 cities in Europe. It's shown at 40 other cities in the US and five in Europe without me there. It's sold over 5000 copies. Over 20,000 people have seen this film (WAY more than I expected when we made it), and a lot of folks told me it changed their life.

I don't want to tour with it anymore. I've seen it over 250 times, and I'm sick of it. I've made my money back, plus a little more (It's worked out to me making about 50 cents an hour for the two years I've spent on it. Pretty good for a first indie movie, I'm told). Sales of DVDs have leveled off, and I will use any income that still trickles in from that to administer costs of the Website, mailings, expenses and time.

I want to move on, to start a new project. But I think the film still has a life. This is where you come in: "Show DIY or DIE, make money, help cats".

I got the idea from the Black Flag reunion. Greg Ginn gave all the money to a cat rescue place. Also, I love cats (obviously -- my URL is kittyfeet.com ) and dogs. I used to volunteer for the SPCA in San Francisco as a cat foster daddy….I had over 50 kittens in my home getting petted by me and Marie, two or three cats at a time, in a 18-month period. Here's photos: ( http://www.kittyfeet.com/cattty.htm ).

So, basically all you do is this:

If you don't have a copy of the film, buy one

( in the US: http://www.musicvideodistributors.com/customer/product.php?productid=199446&cat=&page=1

Or, if you're in Europe, buy it from Quantum Leap ( http://www.qleap.co.uk )

or burn a DVD from a friend. (The DVD is called D.I.Y. or DIE: Burn This DVD and it has no copy protection) Then get a beamer (video projector). Set up a showing. Download a flyer here. Maybe get a band to play or show another movie by you or your friends. Do a cheap show.

If you live in Europe, put on the flyer that the film has subtitles. (It has them in German, French, Italian, Spanish and English).

All I ask is that before the show, you e-mail me with the showing info so I can put it on the Website, and e-mail me after and tell me how much you donated and the name of the shelter. contact me
">

Also, put the name of the animal shelter on the flyer. You. And you should contact the shelter before hanging the flyers up. Most shelters will gladly take donations, but want to know if their name is being used in advertising a benefit.

Also, don’t forget to download a press release from here and add the name of the shelter, the club and the time and date and send it to local newspapers, zines, radio and TV.

(Feel free to share this with friends)

Please forward this info to people, but don't use a subject line like, "Show DIY, Make Money, and help cats", as most spam filters will take that out. How about:

"do a benefit for cats and show DIY or DIE".

the Rock For Cats fine print:

(This offer ends January 1, 2007. I may renew it at that point, but I may not. The reason I make this offer expire in a little over a year is that I don't like to give anything away without limits. That is sort of the idea of intelligent open-source licenses. Give things away, but don't be a fool. Share, but don't rip yourself off. This is open-source kitten help, with heart, but also with a brain.

Keep in mind also that no corporate sponsorships can be connected with any of these showings in any way, and that I reserve the right to prevent any showings that I feel violate the spirit of the project.
