Help with DIY doc! Spread art! Get experience!
Hey
kitties. So, we showed a rough edit of our little film, D.I.Y. OR DIE: HOW TO SURVIVE AS AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST (http://www.diyordie.org/
), at Lost Film at Sundance, and I keep
getting e-mails and calls like “Hey….I didn’t see your film, but my friend did
and we want to show it at our university/theater/bar etc.). Cool….people seem
to want to help this thing, and it’s not even done yet. (Will be done probably
early march).
This
is cool, but I need help. I think it’s a very worthwhile project….showcasing a
bunch of known artists and unknown artists in equal light…based on what they say
rather than who they are. Here’s what we need:
- Mini-DV
tapes. Any length. Used is ok. They cost five bucks each in bulk, and I have to
send them to TV stations and festivals.
- Beta tapes. Any length. Used
is ok. They cost five bucks each in bulk, and I have to send them to TV stations
and festivals.
- Money.
I am spending about 50 bucks every other day on DV tapes, VHS tapes, mailers,
postage, etc. Peter, Lil Mike and I spent over a grand each out of pocket to go
to Utah, and Pete got his camera stolen. So far on this project, we have received
3100 in donations (from 4 donors) and it has cost about 5000 bucks, not counting
the Utah expenses and losses. So I am down about 1900 dollars personally, and
burning through my savings to do the act of getting it out in the world.
Donations
of cash and equipment are tax-deductible. If you can spare some cash, send it
to Intersection for the Arts
446 Valencia Street
San
Francisco, CA 94103
and
mark memo on check "DIY Documentary". Also, if you do this, please e-mail
me and let me know, as Intersection employees are overworked….the last donation
sat there for a month and we needed it for Utah and didn’t get it until later.
- If anyone
has a DV camera or two they can donate (even one-chip, but three chip would be
grand). Also we need a DV deck, and a large Mac hard drive for Miles to archive
the project, and a large PC hard drive for my computer.
- We
need interns. I posted yesterday and got two, but it has been my experience that
they don’t always work out. I have had a guy come over, I spent three hours teaching
him to do something, and he only worked for three hours. Net outcome: nothing.
So, I end up “doing it myself”. But this thing is starting to take off and I am
overwhelmed. I need people that want to help, for credit in the film and a letter
of recommendation, and it doesn’t take a lot of time, and you don’t have to live
in LA (but if you do, even better. I could use help going to Post Office, 99 cent
store, etc.
I’ve
decided to take a vow of poverty for art. This doesn’t mean living wretchedly,
it means having priorities. Even if I ever get rich, I am gonna spend it all on
art supplies and promoting my and other people’s art, and still live simply.
- We need
contacts at local cable access shows around the country. If there is a hip show
in your area, get the contact info, contact them and tell them about the film,
and send the e-mail and phone number of the contact person to me. I will send
them the trailer, and later the film.
- We need
local theaters, bars and universities to show it in. Talk it up and see what you
can find please and send me the info.
Love
and art, md.
